With only four days left before the exciting Alliance Française Street Music Festival takes place, brought to you by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, final preparations are underway with this year’s edition promising to deliver a diverse family affair on September 3, 2022 in Richmond Hill.

The festival makes its return after a four-year hiatus and will see Nelson Mandela Bay artists enjoy a live audience following the recent COVID-19 regulations that limited physical interaction and large gatherings.

In preparation for the upcoming event, various stakeholders in the city, including NMBM role players, security service providers and event organisers, conducted a site visit on Friday, August 26, to ensure proper planning before the big day.

NMBM Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Portfolio Head, Bassie Kamana, said that the festival would create a vibrant environment for families to enjoy live music, a wide variety of food offerings and original crafters.

“The festival will not only offer entertainment for the young and old, but it is a great opportunity to boost businesses. There will be food trucks, restaurant specials, buskers, crafters and Bay chefs. The festival is taking place in September, a month where we celebrate our heritage in South Africa and all the offerings will be speaking to that as we strengthen our means to celebrate diversity in our city,” Kamana said.

Director of Alliance Française, Guillaume Favier Nirere, said that event organisers have prioritised the safety aspect of the street event with safe parking made available for the public at Khumbulani High School.

“Gates will open at 10:00 and the festival runs until 22:00. We have two stages, it’s a platform that allows musicians and members of the public to interact on a social level. It is also an opportunity for the families of the metro to discover new artists and various other creative stalls and have a fun day together. We are looking forward to taking it back to the streets again,” he said.

Residents are reminded that Stanley Street will be closed on the day, from Glen Street to Edward Street and Mackay Street will be closed from Stanley Street down to Raleigh Street. Patrons are urged not to park in front of residential entrances or gates as vehicles will be removed.

Tickets are available on www.afportelizabeth.com or at the gates on the day. Only credit or debit cards will be accepted, no cash. Tickets cost R30 for adults, R10 for scholars and it is free for children under the age of 12 years.
