The Hawks in the Eastern Cape confirmed the kidnapping of a 62-year-old woman in Gqeberha, the latest in a string of kidnappings that has rocked the province in recent months.
Unverified reports of the alleged kidnapping made its rounds on social media yesterday.
In a social media post, by eBlockwatch, a single mother was on her way home on Wednesday night when she was allegedly kidnapped.
“A single parent was kidnapped while driving home from work last night in Port Elizabeth, sparking renewed fears of an organised kidnapping syndicate,” the post read.
“According to family members, she never arrived home and an alarm was raised. Shortly afterward, a ransom demand was received confirming she is being held captive.”
In the post, eBlockwatch added that the victim’s car was allegedly recovered in the early hours of the morning in New Brighton.
Responding to questions, Provincial Haws spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba appealed to the public for any information regarding the case.
“The Hawks have noted the reports regarding the alleged kidnapping of a 62-year-old woman in Gqeberha on 20 August,” he said. “Although the matter was not formally reported to us by the family, the kidnapping task team was immediately activated after the incident came to light.
“The team is currently pursuing all possible leads and we appeal to anyone who may have information that could assist investigators to come forward.”
All information shared will be handled with the strictest confidentiality, he added.
Earlier this month, on 11 August, Theresa Minnie (73) was kidnapped in front of her home in Kariega. Days later she was safely released on 16 August. The police have since arrested two suspects in that case.
