During a joint intervention between the Gqeberha Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, SAPS Mount Road Task Team and the Nelson Mandela Metro Detective Intervention Task Team, a hijacking suspect was arrested and linked to two unrelated hijackings reported within the Mount Road precinct on Friday, May 23.

According to SAPS spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, it is alleged that on Wednesday, May 14, at approximately 07:50, a 28-year-old female had her black Mitsubishi hijacked in Southey Street, Perridgevale by one suspect.

“The complainant tried to fight the suspect off but was subsequently knocked over; she sustained significant injuries. During the investigation on Thursday, 15 May 2025, SAPS Gqeberha K9 Unit recovered the vehicle in Military Road, Central and arrested one 24-year-old suspect,” she said.

The suspect was detained on charges of possession of stolen property and was released by the court after a formal bail application on Wednesday, May 21.

She added, “The second hijacking was reported on Thursday, May 22, at approximately 08:00, when he hijacked a VW Polo from another 28-year-old female at McAdam Street, Newton Park.

“The victim also attempted to scuffle with the suspect, but the suspect pushed her, and she fell over. The suspect drove off with the VW Polo. Later the same day, SAPS Mount Road Task Team recovered the vehicle abandoned in Kempston Road, Kensington.”

Janse Van Rensburg said, “On Friday, May 23, the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit interviewed the complainant and gathered information on a possible suspect. With the assistance of the Nelson Mandela Metro Detective Intervention Task Team, the complainant pointed out a suspect and later Friday, May 23, they arrested the suspect who is also implicated in the previous hijacking in Perridgevale on charges of hijacking.”

The suspect will appear at the Gqeberha Magistrates’ Court today, May 26, on charges of hijacking.
