The Gqeberha aviation community will gather next week to celebrate the life of Tyler Horrmann, a 21-year-old commercial pilot whose promising career was tragically cut short in an aircraft accident in Cape Town.

Horrmann and experienced instructor Mike Cooper died on Sunday, 30 November, when their Sling 2 aircraft crashed after reportedly experiencing difficulties shortly after take-off.

A memorial service has been organised for Tuesday, 9 December at 13:00 in the General Aviation Area at Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport.

The Algoa Flying Club is hosting the tribute to โ€œcelebrate the life of Tyler Horrmannโ€”a passionate aviator, a great man, a loyal friend and someone whose dreams were always carried on the wings of flight.โ€

Meanwhile, the Barnacles Restaurant in Seaview announced that their doors would be closed to the public on Tuesday, 9 December.

“Barnacles Restaurant will be closed for the day as we take time to honour and remember Tyler Horrmann โ€” someone who was truly loved by our team and who will always remain part of our Barnacles family,” a social media post read.

“This has been an incredibly difficult time for all of us, and we want to stand together to support Tylerโ€™s family, friends and our staff who were close to him. His beautiful spirit, kindness and presence touched many lives and we will carry those memories with us forever.”

A life lived with passion

In a moving tribute posted on social media, the Algoa Flying Club wrote: โ€œTylerโ€™s love for aviation, his dedication to excellence and the joy he brought to those around him will forever remain part of our journey.โ€

โ€œThough we feel the weight of his absence, we honour the freedom he found in the sky and the impact he left here on the ground,โ€ the club continued. โ€œFly free, Tyler. Your final approach is to eternal blue skies.โ€

Community in mourning

The tragedy has particularly resonated within South Africaโ€™s aviation community. One tribute on social media captured this sentiment: โ€œThis has shocked the aviation community as we all have become like โ€˜familyโ€™ as we watch each other grow.โ€

Former educators also shared fond memories of Tylerโ€™s time at school, with one describing him as โ€œa most admired, respected, appreciated and happy student when in high school.โ€ They added: โ€œMy heart goes out to his amazing parents (who raised the best boy to be so happy, confident, caring and unafraid of hard work and big dreams) and to his wonderful brother and his many, very loved friends and girlfriend.โ€

Those who knew Tyler remember him not only for his aviation skills but for his character. Friends and colleagues described him as someone who โ€œmade a positive impact on everyoneโ€ and was known for his confidence, caring nature and fearless approach to pursuing his dreams.

Another tribute read: โ€œOur deepest condolences to Tylerโ€™s parents and family, his friends and those in the aviation world he interacted with daily. He clearly made a huge impact in the lives he touched.โ€

The memorial service for Tyler Horrmann will take place on Tuesday, 9 December at 13:00 in the General Aviation Area of the Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport in Boeing Street, Walmer.
