A 33-year-old suspect was arrested on Saturday, July 26, during a targeted operation by SAPS KwaZakhele Task Team members, which led to the recovery of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

According to a SAPS spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, at around 15:55, the task team was patrolling known hotspot areas when they received information about a suspect travelling in a grey Datsun Go towards Tunyiswa Street in Zwide. Acting swiftly, members intercepted the vehicle on Matika Street, successfully blocking all possible escape routes.

“Upon interception, the suspect attempted to flee on foot whilst carrying a black R5 Dashprod semi-automatic rifle. He was quickly apprehended. The rifle, with its serial number filed off, and 12 rounds of ammunition were confiscated along with the vehicle.”

She added that the suspect was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a prohibited firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition, and is expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court today, July 28.

The Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata, praised the swift action of the SAPS KwaZakhele Task Team.

“We applaud the members for their dedication in removing dangerous weapons from our streets. We also urge community members to continue providing valuable information that can help prevent violent crimes and ensure safer neighbourhoods,” said Ncata.
