Mandela Day at Community Chest was filled with visits to various projects. The priority was supporting Gelvandale High School Hostel, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela University and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
The hostel is in a state of disrepair, and the challenge for learners was no water in the dormitories.
“My surprise for the learners was to have all the plumbing and geysers repaired on their return after the school holidays. On the morning of Mandela Day there were shouts of joy when they discovered they could have a hot shower, something they have been deprived of for a while,” said Community Chest project manager, Sandy Abdoll.
Community Chest thanks all the stakeholders and volunteers on the day from various corporates.
“We would like thank the Industrial Development Corporation for their generous donation of a R100 000 towards future repairs needed at the hostel,” added Abdoll.
