The Humansdorp Regional Court has set July 1 as the deadline for filing heads of argument in the lengthy bail hearing of Gqeberha businessman Rob Evans, the court heard today, June 18.
State prosecutor Bianca Burger described the bail application as one that “has taken longer than a trial.”
Evans, 58, faces charges including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice following the Easter weekend death of his girlfriend, 36-year-old Vanessa van Rensburg, at his Oyster Bay holiday home.
Defence attorney Paul Roelofse also requested a postponement to file his heads of argument by July 1.
As previously reported by Express, the Gqeberha businessman was considered a flight risk by the investigating officer due to his offer of R100 000 in cash for his bail and concerns that he may intimidate state witnesses, given the possibility of two life sentences he could face.
Magistrate Deidre Dickson will then review the submissions before delivering her final decision on Evans’s bail application.
The businessman will remain in custody.
