A Port Elizabeth grandfather whose unwavering support helped his family through a medical crisis has been named PE Express and Boardwalk Hotel and Casino’s Father’s Day competition winner. Faizel Padachie earned the recognition after his daughter, Shaakiera Moodley, detailed how her father became their rock when her young son was hospitalised with bacterial meningitis, resulting in the amputation of both his fingers and feet.
In her heartfelt letter, Shaakiera wrote: “My dad truly deserves this break. Our family has been through an incredibly challenging time recently. My young son was hospitalised with bacterial meningitis, and as a result, he had both his fingers and feet amputated,” noting that they document the journey on social media (@zeeyasjourney).
“It’s been a heartbreaking journey, and we’ve now moved in with my parents to get the support we need as we begin the long road of rehabilitation and adjusting to our new reality,” she continued.
Throughout it all, her dad has been their pillar of strength. “He’s always there, quietly supportive, never complaining, and endlessly loving toward his grandkids. He’s the kind of person who gives without expecting anything in return.”
“This break would mean the world to us, not just for him to finally relax and take a breather from the emotional weight he carries for our family, but also as a way to show how deeply we appreciate everything he does. He deserves a moment of peace and joy,” she concluded.
