Kariega resident Marchel Robinson and his son, Kurt (21) – who is a first time voter – were turned away at the Handhaaf voting station in Kariega today, despite registering there on 18 September for today’s elections.

According to Robinson, he went to register at Handhaaf since he moved from Rosedale; and his son registered there as well as it would have been his first time voting.

During the registration he was shown on a computer that he is registered at Handhaaf. But today, after and hour in the queue, he was told he is not on the voter’s role at Handhaaf.

After returning home he phoned the IEC who told him that the Handhaaf polling station should have an amended sheet with the names of people who registered during the September registration process.

According to Robinson he returned to the Handhaaf polling station and was told they do not have an amended sheet. He was told to vote at Rosedale and that his son, due to him not being registered at Handhaaf, will not be able to vote at all.

– Netwerk24

“Hier was geen voorvalle in my area nie. More than 3.5 million people have cast their votes

The Electoral Commission (IEC) is happy to report that over 99% of the 23 148 voting stations opened on time to kick start voting in the 2021 Municipal Elections.

“The Commission commends South Africans for coming out, as they continue to, in huge numbers to vote,” the IEC said in a statement.

“As at 12:30 over 3.5 million voters had already voted. We are able to report this because of the use of the voter management devices. The Commission is therefore satisfied with the voting process.”

Volgens raadslid Heinrich Muller verloop alles nog vlot by dié stemlokaal nadat dinge ietwat stadig gevorder het vroeër, weens tegniese probleme.

Foto: Candice Bezuidenhout
