As of today, April 1, Eskom will factor in the 18.65% tariff increase granted by the National Energy Regulator.

Customers who buy their electricity directly from Eskom will have to dig deeper into their pockets following the steep price hike.

As of today, April 1, Eskom will factor in the 18.65% tariff increase granted by the National Energy Regulator.

The power utility had initially requested an over 32% increase, almost double what the regulator ultimately approved, citing higher fuel costs among other reasons.

Eskom said the April increases would only affect those who are directly supplied by the power utility, while electricity tariff increases for municipalities only take effect on July 1, 2023.

According to a statement by Eskom, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) approved an application for Eskom to hike its tariffs in January.

“Including the increase to the affordability subsidy charge, the 18.65% increase to the non-municipal key industrial and urban customers grows to 19.09% and is effective on April 1, 2023. During April to June 2023, the 2022/23 tariffs will be applicable to municipalities. The 18.49% municipal increase will be effective from July 1, 2023,” the statement read.

The NERSA 2023/24 tariff decisions will be implemented as follows:
  • Non-local authority tariffs (non-municipal customers) will come into effect from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024; and
  • The local authority tariffs will come into effect from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024 in compliance to the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).
