Africana and collectible book sale

July 22 – July 23 | 09:00 – 15:00

A treasure trove of rare books will go on sale at the Walmer Library Hall (opposite Walmer Police Station) on Tuesday, July 22 and Wednesday, July 23 from 09:00 to 15:00.

Included in the sale will be books dating back to the late 1800s.

While most of the publications cover South African history in all its aspects, there will also be a significant number on international subjects, such as The Island Race by Winston Churchill and a work on Lake Nyasa called Livingstone’s Lake.

Among the Africana will be a number of biographies, ranging from politicians to controversial businessmen.

A number of books tracing the history of Gqeberha and the Eastern Cape make for interesting reading and the fiction section includes editions of, among many others, CJ Langenhoven’s Herrie op die Tremspoor and an unusual illustrated version of Story of an African Farm.

Sport, past and present, is well represented, including biographies of English Premier League greats. Traditional children’s books by well-loved authors such as Enid Blyton may also be found on the sale tables.

The sale will be run by the Port Elizabeth Feeding Trust which supports a number of childcare organisations in Gqeberha and the surrounding areas. All the money raised will go towards these charities. Generous discounts will be available to collectors who prefer to buy large numbers of books.

• The Trust has its office and bookshop in the Walmer Town Hall, adjacent to the library. Books for the sale as well as the shop are donated by the public. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00.
