COOKHOUSE – A fatal multi-vehicle crash claimed five lives yesterday, 30 November, on a remote stretch of the N10 between Cookhouse and Gqeberha, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport confirms. The collision involved two trucks and a bakkie.

Department of Transport and Safety spokesperson Unathi Binqose said emergency services were on the scene and the situation remained fluid.

“We note that the remoteness of the area and poor mobile phone network coverage are contributing to delays in the flow of information from the crash site,” he said.

The department was working closely with law enforcement, EMS, and other stakeholders to gather verified details as quickly as possible.

“A total of five people have died (two males and three females) in that accident that occurred on the N10 today,” Binqose said.

He added that two others sustained injuries and were rushed to Andries Vosloo Hospital.

“The road has since been reopened to traffic.”

A case of culpable homicide has been opened with Cookhouse SAPS.
