The funeral service for Gqeberha Police Constable Callan John Andrews will be held tomorrow, Saturday, 11 January at 10 a.m. at the Ebenezer Church in Algoa Park.
Police Constable Andrews, aged 29, who was attached to the Gelvandale Police Station, was brutally murdered while on duty on December 31, 2024.
At the time of the incident, the officer was on Voisen Road in Katanga, Gelvandale, Gqeberha. It was earlier reported that the vehicle he and his partner were patrolling in, stalled. Const. Andrews was pushing the vehicle to kickstart it, accompanied by community members. The suspects reportedly grabbed his service firearm and fatally wounded him.
Constable Andrews was rushed to the nearest hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, and Acting Deputy National Commissioner for Support Services, Lieutenant General Lineo Nkhua, are expected to attend the funeral service.
Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, said one of the accused abandoned bail, while the other suspect is proceeding with his formal bail application. The matter was remanded to 15 January for further investigation and bail information. Both are remanded in custody.
Their 17-year-old co-accused appeared in the Gqeberha Nerina House Youth Court earlier.
