Gqeberha was abuzz with excitement on Saturday, February 1, as it hosted the Red Bull BC One GQ Regional Final, where rising breakdancing star Leonardo “B-Boy Da Vinci” Kiewiets from Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, won the regional cypher event.

His standout performance secured him a spot in the National Final in Johannesburg this March.

Speaking to the Express, Kiewiets revealed that his passion for dance is a cherished family tradition.

“My father, mother, and brother are all dancers—it runs in the family,” he shared.

Reflecting on the impact of dance in his life, he said, “I’ve been through a lot. Dance has helped me get off the streets and overcome many challenges.”

As he looks ahead to his third appearance at the National Finals, Kiewiets is filled with excitement.

“I’m going to have fun,” he commented with a warm smile. “I’ll just enjoy myself and let God take over.”

Red Bull Communications Specialist Ayanda Sotshisa highlighted the event’s goal: to shape the breaking scene by nurturing local talent.

Speaking on Kiewiets’ journey, Sotshisa commented, “For the past six years, Leonardo has relentlessly chased victory, driven by his unwavering passion and determination.”

Sotshisa added that it was Vouks, a judge and renowned figure in the South African breaking scene, who introduced Kiewiets to Red Bull BC One, inspiring him to push his boundaries.
