Deoleen Stuurman, of Tjaart van der Walt Primary School, and Stefan Roberts of Framesby High, were the toast of the Eastern Province team at the South African Amateur Wrestling Championships in Pretoria.

They were part of a powerful Algoa Park team that made the province proud.

Stuurman and Roberts secured unique performances that will not be easy to equal.

In what can be seen as a rare achievement, Stuurman won the national title for the third year in a row, while Roberts also won back-to-back titles.

“These performances by Stuurman and Roberts were just brilliant. We are so proud of them. It is not every day that a wrestler wins two or three titles in a row at this highly competitive level,” media spokesperson Louisa Scholtz said.

Stuurman entered four divisions and returned home with two gold medals and one silver. Roberts also competed in four divisions, winning two gold and two silver medals.

Liam van Jaarsveld, also of Tjaart van der Walt Primary, entered six divisions in the U/13 and U/15 categories, where he won two silver and three bronze medals.

“His improvement since last year was quite remarkable,” Scholtz said.

Simone Kossman of Andrew Rabie High School caused the upset of the event when she defeated highly-rated Mija Vermeulen of Western Province in the quarter-final.
