Adverse weather conditions caused by heavy rainfall continue to disrupt daily life in Gqeberha today, October 22, as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 6 warning, indicating disruptive rain leading to flooding of settlements, properties, and roads, posing a danger to life.

Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, commented on the current situation, stating that driving in some parts of the Eastern Cape has been challenging, particularly in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. “We fear more mudslides and possible rock falls as the soil is saturated. The recent weather warnings of more rain are not good news for us. We urge road users to either reduce their travel if possible or be extra vigilant if travel is necessary,” he added.

In response to the disruptive rain, civil society has mobilised to provide much-needed supplies to flood-affected areas in Gqeberha. Denise van Huyssteen, Chief Executive Officer at Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, stated that the Gift of the Givers is utilising the Chamber as the collection point for donations to support vulnerable communities affected by the flooding.

“Thank you to the Community Chest for their donation of duvet inners. Key items required include blankets, toiletries such as soaps and toothbrushes, and baby-care items such as nappies and milk formula. Any businesses or individuals who are able to assist are welcome to drop off items at the Chamber.”

However, there is still a need for more assistance as additional areas in the Metro that have been affected by the heavy rainfall. The Missionvale Care Centre has requested community members to assist with donations of blankets, dry clothing, and food.

“The electricity is also out due to the extreme weather. To get hold of us, please use either of these numbers: 076 205 0497 or 083 680 5267. Drop-off at Dinner4U in Burt Drive, Cotswold, or we can collect,” the Centre posted on Facebook.
