GQEBERHA’S heroic K9, “Night,” was discharged from the Walmer Veterinary Hospital recently and is on the road to recovery following injuries sustained during a dramatic housebreaking incident on April 21.
Night will spend three weeks “off duty” under close care at the Gqeberha K9 unit before returning to his role as a vital member of the police team.
Early last week, Night was reunited with his handler, Warrant Officer Damian Theron, who expressed immense relief. “Night was clearly thrilled to see me, and it’s a relief to have him back,” said Theron.
“He’s a fighter, and I have no doubt he’ll be ready to protect the community again soon.”
On the night of the incident, K9 Night and WO Theron responded to a housebreaking in progress at Woodside Grove, Providentia. Trespassers had gained entry by breaking through burglar bars while the homeowners were out of town.
After issuing verbal warnings with no response, Theron deployed Night to search the dark premises.
During the sweep, a suspect emerged from a hiding spot in a cupboard and attempted to flee toward a window. “Night intercepted the suspect, but the man broke a glass window and forced Night’s head toward the shards,” Theron explained.
Night sustained lacerations to his throat and neck and a cut on his paw, but still managed to subdue the suspect, who was later arrested.
Realising the severity of the injuries, Theron acted swiftly. “I noticed the blood and knew something was wrong. I removed Night, wrapped my jersey around his neck to stop the bleeding, and rushed him to the vet,” he said.
Night’s bravery and determination have earned the admiration of the community and his handler.
“For any dog handler, their dog is everything,” said Theron. “Night is more than just a K9; he’s my partner and feels more like a son. When we work, we’ve got each other’s backs.”
Theron reflected on memorable moments with Night, including a car chase involving hijackers in KwaZakhele last year, where Night apprehended the driver after warnings to surrender were ignored. “Night knows when to work and when to be humble,” Theron added. “He’s a loving dog, but if you’re on the wrong side of the law, he will get you.”
Night’s instincts and rigorous training have proven exceptional in the line of duty. Theron recalled one incident where Night sniffed out a suspect hiding in a deep trench under dense bushes after an armed robbery. “His training is truly remarkable,” said Theron.
As Night recovers, Theron looks forward to having his partner back on duty. “There’s a certain confidence and peace of mind working with him by my side. Night is watching my back just as much as I’m watching his, whether it’s tracking, searching, or patrolling the streets of Gqeberha.”
Gqeberha police have lauded both Night and Theron for their courage under fire. SAPS spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, commended the duo, saying, “Night displayed incredible bravery, proving once again the vital role K9 units play in law enforcement. And WO Theron’s swift actions saved Night’s life. Their partnership is an inspiration.”
The community and SAPS also expressed gratitude to Walmer Veterinary Services and Dr Campher for their prompt treatment, ensuring Night’s life-saving care.
The suspect, a 21-year-old man, was treated for minor injuries before being detained on charges of housebreaking and trespassing.
While Night focuses on recovery, the Gqeberha K9 unit continues its essential work protecting the community. With his return anticipated in a few weeks, Theron said Night’s journey is proof of the unmatched courage and loyalty of K9 officers in service to the public. “Seeing him back in action, doing what he loves – serving and protecting our community – is what I’m most excited for as he heals,” Theron concluded.
