GQEBERHA – The South African higher education community is mourning the loss of Professor Lis Lange, a distinguished academic leader and former Nelson Mandela University Council member, whose passing has left a significant void in the sector.

Professor Lange, who dedicated her career to advancing academic excellence and social transformation, was remembered by colleagues as a visionary leader whose impact extended far beyond the institutions she served.

Speaking on behalf of the institution, Nelson Mandela University Council and Executive Management released a statement expressing their profound grief at the loss.

“It is with profound sadness that Nelson Mandela University has learned of the passing of Professor Lis Lange, a respected academic leader and former member of the University Council,” the statement read.

The university leadership emphasised Professor Lange’s lasting impact on South African higher education, stating: “Professor Lange’s passing is a great loss to the higher education sector and to all who had the privilege of working with her.”

“She will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to academic excellence, social justice, and transformation in South African higher education,” university officials said in their tribute.

The statement further highlighted her personal qualities that made her such an influential figure: “Her wisdom, integrity, and compassion left an indelible mark on the many institutions she served and the lives she touched.”

The impact of Professor Lange’s work was acknowledged beyond her home institution, with Universities South Africa (USAf) also paying tribute to her legacy.

Dr Phethiwe Matutu, CEO of USAf, highlighted the qualities that made Professor Lange such a respected figure in higher education circles.

“We will miss Professor Lange for her outspokenness, her courage, and her bold advocacy for transformation in higher education. The sector is poorer for losing this bright mind,” Dr Matutu said.
