Gqeberha author, Chené Tuck recently shared insights into her compelling travel memoir “Finding My Supergirl,” ahead of its official launch this weekend. The book, which chronicles her personal journey across eight countries, offered readers a powerful narrative of self-discovery and resilience.

In an interview, Tuck revealed that her writing journey began with a blog featuring book reviews and inspirational messages. “I have always wanted to connect with people through writing,” she explained. During personal challenges detailed in the book’s opening chapters, writing became an emotional outlet for the author.

“After reading two books which helped me feel seen and not so alone, I decided I needed to share my experiences,” Tuck said. “I wanted to give strength and hope to anyone going through similar circumstances.”

The memoir’s evocative title, “Finding My Supergirl,” reflected the author’s quest to discover inner strength after profound loss. “It’s about finding that courage to take a step in a new direction when your world has been torn apart and you feel lost,” she said.

Tuck’s narrative spanned an impressive geographical range, including the UK, Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Bali, and New Zealand. The eight-year writing process, which began in 2014 and concluded with the final draft in 2022, mirrored the extensive nature of her travels.

When asked about challenges faced during her journeys, Tuck highlighted the struggle to find belonging. “I felt like I didn’t fit in in Port Elizabeth anymore, but being a foreigner in a foreign country was just as challenging,” she admitted. A particularly poignant moment occurred when she lost a parent whilst living abroad and was unable to return for the funeral.

The memoir explored themes of societal expectations and personal identity. “In society today we are often met with certain expectations about things we are supposed to have achieved by a pre-determined age,” Tuck observed. “A lot of these are outdated and the world has changed and so should the rules that govern these expectations.”

The writing process proved transformative for the author. “It has shown me that I am stronger than I ever thought I was,” she reflected. “That I am capable of weathering any storm and that a new life is one decision or step away if we have the courage to take it.”

Tuck hoped readers would find encouragement in her story, emphasising that “there is always hope and this too shall pass, whatever the situation might be.”
