Gelvandale delivered yet another talented vocalist who creates music from her life experiences in the Northern Areas.

Hip-hop sensation Tamia Moodley (20), who goes by the stage name Mia-Liyah, has recently released another single which now features on Algoa FM.

The singer and songwriter has written several songs which were inspired by personal experiences and the issues which affect youth in general.

“I perform hip-hop, as this genre is driven by street culture, social issues, relationships and life experiences,” explained Moodley.

Her first song, “Murder in My Street”, is a typical example of how she expresses societal ills in her music, while her next song, “Icon”, reflects a more personal account of her life. These songs were followed by several others.

Moodley started singing at the age of three, when she imitated the likes of Celine Dion. By the time she reached high school, she started recording her songs in the bedroom and currently she works with a producer, Unreal Lincoln, and records in a studio.

Her mother, Sameerah Dolley, said that Moodley was determined to become a professional singer at a young age.

“She is determined and she strives to succeed against all odds,” said Dolley.

Moodley’s childhood was not easy explained Dolley. “She is the eldest of my four children and it was a struggle to raise them, but we managed to pull through,” she said.

While the singer is considering pursuing a career in teaching or film, she has been unemployed since matriculating two years ago.

Moodley has the support from her entire family and is now just waiting for a breakthrough in the music arena.

Her music can be heard on social media under her stage name. She believes that there is more scope in the bigger cities, but for now she will be home-based.
