THIS Mandela Day, celebrated annually on July 18, Nelson Mandela University is partnering with Gelvandale High School Hostel to bring dignity, education, food security, wellness and safety back to the community.
With the theme “Restoring Dignity and Hope”, residents can look forward to various empowerment activities, hosted at Gelvandale High School from July 16 to July 18.
According to NMU Media and Communications Intern, Afika Dotye, the campaign is more than just a tribute to Mandela’s legacy.
“This event aims to uplift vulnerable groups in the Northern Areas through a series of dedicated service activities. It is a real and practical investment in dignity, hope and healing for the community.”
On Wednesday, July 16, a workshop is taking place at the Helenvale Resource Centre.
“Activities at the event will include conversations on gender-based violence (GBV) and adaptive aerobics sessions to promote wellness and expression circles,” said Dotye.
He added that the event is open to the community, educators, caregivers, students and volunteers.
On Thursday, July 17, the campaign will focus on the elderly and persons with disability at the Gelvandale Hostel of Hope. “Planned activities for the day include wellness pampering sessions (massages, grooming, relaxation), conversations on nutrition and well-being, as well as conversations on legal rights such as wills.”
Senior citizens from the Northern suburbs, aged 60 and above, are welcome to attend.
For the final day of the campaign on Friday, July 18, residents will have access to multiple sites at and around Gelvandale High School where clean-ups, gardening, mural painting and service projects are expected to take place.
