SAPS Kabega Park arrested two suspects, confiscated two firearms with ammunition and recovered a stolen Ford Ranger LDV following a brazen shooting incident on the N2 that ended in an accident on Thursday, August 1.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the incident happened at approximately 16:00, when a silver VW Polo with four occupants was traveling on the N2 towards Gqeberha.
She said the driver noticed a white Ford Ranger and another blue VW Polo behind him.
“When the driver of the silver VW Polo changed lanes to allow the Ford Ranger to pass him, the two passengers on the left side of the Ford Ranger opened fire on the silver VW Polo.
“In an attempt to ward off the attackers, the VW Polo bumped into the Ford Ranger.
“The driver of the Ford Ranger lost control and collided with a pillar under the bridge,” she reported.
She added that the silver VW Polo continued driving, when he noticed that the blue VW Polo that was travelling behind the Ford Ranger also came alongside him and fired shots at the silver VW Polo.
She further added that ” The driver of the silver VW Polo drove to Livingstone as two of the four passengers sustained gunshot wounds while the blue VW Polo continued on the N2.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that one passenger from the Ford Ranger had fled the scene.”
She revealed the Ford Ranger driver passed away, and two more passengers sustained injuries due to the accident.
“Two firearms with ammunition were confiscated at the scene and it was confirmed that the Ford Ranger was stolen in Newton Street, Newton Park between the Tuesday evening, July 16 and Wednesday morning, July 17.
“The two passengers, both aged 30, who were injured, were arrested and taken to hospital for treatment and are currently under police guard.
“The silver VW polo was also impounded for investigation.
“The motive for the shooting is currently under investigation, and the two detained suspects are facing charges of four counts of attempted murder, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
“A case of culpable homicide is also under investigation,” she concluded.
