A shocking incident unfolded in Nelson Mandela Bay, where Ward 19 Councillor, Gamalihleli Maqula was shot during a hijacking in Kwazakele earlier this afternoon, August 28.
According to Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, SAPS Mount Road responded to a complaint in Matthew Lane, North End, at approximately 12:15. Upon arrival, they found the councillor with a gunshot wound to his left upper leg.
“The complainant alleged that he was hijacked in Makubela Street, Kwazakele, and later dropped in Matthew Lane with the gunshot wound,” Captain Janse Van Rensburg confirmed.
At the time of the incident, Councillor Maqula did not want to make an official statement. However, a skeleton docket of attempted murder has been opened for further investigation.
The councillor was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle for medical attention. Captain Janse Van Rensburg has urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
