In a show of support for the family of murdered 12-year-old Lithaliyanda Ntoni of Motherwell, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe called for the perpetrator to be denied bail.
The mayor joined residents outside Motherwell Magistrate’s Court where the accused Sonwabo Nqayi, a pastor, appeared for a bail application.
He faces four charges namely: kidnapping, rape, murder and defeating the ends of justice.
“It is deeply concerning that many of the crimes affecting our young people are being committed by individuals in trusted roles — people who should be protecting, not harming, our children,” said Lobishe.
“While we are making strides in strengthening visible policing and securing our streets, true safety must begin in our homes and communities.”
She called for renewed focus on the enforcement of child protection laws, stricter accountability and public awareness.
“We must stand together to protect our children, not just in public spaces but behind closed doors too.”
Mayor Lobishe commended the community for raising their voices and taking a firm stand, adding that the Municipality will continue to advocate for stronger legal responses to GBV.
The municipality has since started an online petition to ensure the accused is not granted bail.
