Operation ‘Bamba’, a joint operation between SAPS, Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Metro Police and various other stakeholders, continues to have success in removing firearms from the streets.

According to police spokesperson, a 30-year-old shop owner was arrested on April 10, at approximately 09:00, after a 9mm pistol and 10 rounds of ammunition were found in a shop in Gerald Smith, Kamesh. He has been charged with the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“Later the same day, at approximately 19:30, two male suspects were arrested in Blackburn Street, Govan Mbeki, KwaDwesi, for the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Beetge said.

He added that the firearm, a 9mm pistol with 6 rounds of ammunition, were discovered in the glove compartment of a Toyota Quantum minibus.

Operation ‘Bamba’ is part of the intervention strategy that is aimed at stabilising the rise in contact crimes in the northern areas of Nelson Mandela Bay.

“The SAPS continue to implement national intervention operations to prevent and combat threats to the safety and security of communities,” Beetge concluded.
