More than 30 motorists have been arrested, in two days, for driving under the influence of alcohol as part of an intensified festive season safety campaign across the Nelson Mandela Bay District.
The arrests were carried out during roadblock operations conducted by SAPS in partnership with Traffic Services and law enforcement agencies.
Police Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg confirmed that the multidisciplinary operations were designed to reduce road accidents.
“The multidisciplinary operations, carried out in partnership with Traffic Services and other law enforcement agencies, are aimed at ensuring road safety and reducing accidents during the busy festive period,” Janse Van Rensburg shared.
The operations have also resulted in numerous traffic fines issued to motorists found violating road traffic regulations.
Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo welcomed the positive impact of the roadblock operations, expressing the serious nature of drunk driving offences.
“Motorists are urged to obey traffic laws, act responsibly and ensure that they do not place their own lives or those of others at risk.”
The police operations form part of a broader strategy to maintain heightened visibility on roads throughout the festive season, when traffic volumes is expected to increase due to holiday travel.
Police have appealed to members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officials and to report any criminal or reckless behaviour on the roads.
