Two more suspects, both aged 27, were arrested in connection with the murder of Constable Callan Andrews, which took place on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve in Helenvale.

Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, said that they were arrested yesterday, January 6, by the Gqeberha Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit of the Hawks. This occurred in a joint effort with the Gqeberha Tactical Response Team (TRT) and the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), in relation to allegations of the police murder and the robbery of a state firearm.

Their co-accused, a 17-year-old, who was arrested on January 4, 2025, appeared before the Gqeberha Nerina House Youth Court yesterday. An 18-year-old suspect, who was also arrested on January 4, was released yesterday as he could not be positively linked to the case.

The two 27-year-old suspects are expected to make their first court appearance in the Gelvandale Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, January 8. “However, further details on the matter will not be divulged at the moment as the matter is still under investigation,” said WO Mhlakuvana.

Police Constable Andrews, aged 29, who was attached to the Gelvandale Police Station, was brutally murdered while on duty on December 31, 2024. At the time of the incident, the officer was on Voisen Road in Katanga, Gelvandale, Gqeberha. According to a statement issued by the Hawks, the suspects reportedly seized his service pistol and fatally wounded him.
