Members of The South African Police Service will gather in their collective grief to bid farewell to one of their own, Captain Pierre Marx, who will be laid to rest in East London today, January 15.
The 53-year-old member died last Saturday, January 8, whilst attending to a complaint of drowning together with his co-divers from the East London K9 Search and Rescue Unit.
“It is during the rescue mission in the Horse Shoe Valley area that Marx struggled with a strong current, sweeping him into the heavy stream. His body was recovered in the early hours of Sunday morning,” provincial police spokesperson, Brig. Tembinkosi Kinana, said.
The floods in the province have claimed the lives of 21 people.
Captain Marx was a well-known member of the SAPS who was recognised for his outstanding heroic rescue activities within the province. He had won a couple of Bravery Awards and was very popular among various communities who witnessed his sense of commitment to his work as a seasoned police diver.
Police Minister, General Bheki Cele, will deliver the eulogy at the funeral service this morning.
