According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, Samson’s body was one of two bodies found by police, while the other male body is yet to be identified.

He said that on Monday, police activated helicopters to provide aerial support during the search and recovery operation, which started on Friday when Curtis was swept away by currents.

“The SAPS Search and Rescue team from the K9 Unit was activated and resumed the search and recovery operation with assistance from other stakeholders. The operation continued over the weekend, with scheduled stops during sunset,” Nkohli said.

He added that moments after the SAPS helicopters were activated, “the crew spotted two bodies floating in separate areas of the river. The first body was identified as Curtis Samson. The second body was an African male and is yet to be identified. Police divers then retrieved the two bodies.”

Police have opened two separate inquest dockets for further investigation.
