Motorists are advised to avoid the R75 towards Jansenville due to ongoing protest action, which started this morning, Tuesday, 17 June, around 05:00.
Trucks have been used to block the R75 at both entrances to town, as well as the R339 to Klipplaat, and protesters have taken the keys. Authorities are working to resolve the situation. Police and traffic officers are on-site, monitoring the situation and diverting traffic to alternative routes.
Some residents indicated that the blocking of the road is related to discontent with the progress of the investigation into the murder of a 53-year-old Jansenville resident, Piet Tieman, whose body was found in town with gunshot wounds to the upper body on May 18.
However, this could not be confirmed. According to Captain Marius McCarthy, Communications Officer for SAPS in the Sarah Baartman District, they still have to establish why the roads have been blocked.
