GQEBERHA – The horse racing fraternity is in mourning after the passing of multiple-time East Cape Champion trainer Gavin Smith (59) on Sunday.

Smith passed away after a battle with cancer.

He has been one of the top trainers in the province since he became a trainer in 1996, taking over from his late dad Andy.

Not only was Smith regarded as one of the best trainers in the country for many years, but he was also known as one of the true gentlemen of the sport.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Dean and daughter Abbi van der Merwe.

Many well-known racing personalities paid tribute to Smith, describing him not only as a legendary trainer but also as a true gentleman.

“A terrific human being. We sponsored his stable for many years and he was such a great guy,” the brand and communications manager of Hollywoodbets, Devin Heffer, said.

“We were so proud to be associated with him. This is a big loss to the racing community,” Heffer added.

Fairview trainer Tara Laing said Smith’s passing is a severe blow to the South African racing fraternity.

“He was an incredible trainer and will leave a huge void in the Fairview training ranks.”
