The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) announced yesterday that an emergency water shutdown would affect significant parts of the metro on Thursday, June 5, due to necessary repairs on the Churchill bulk pipeline.

According to information provided by the NMBM, although the disruption was officially scheduled for Thursday, some residents started experiencing water outages today, Tuesday, June 3, catching many households unprepared.

The municipality confirmed that the following areas would be affected by the shutdown:

  • Coastal suburbs of NMBM
  • Blue Horizon Bay
  • Beachview
  • Walmer (7th Avenue to 17th Avenue)
  • Walmer Township
  • Parts of Walmer Heights
  • Walmer Downs
  • Charlo
  • Overbaakens
  • Newton Park
  • Parts of Fairview
  • High-lying areas of Schauderville
  • Mangold Park
  • Greenacres
  • Perridgevale
  • Adcockvale
  • Parsons Hill
  • Glendinningvale
  • Mill Park
  • Linkside
  • Mount Croix
  • Greenacres Hospital
  • St George’s Hospital
  • Richmond Hill
  • High-lying areas of Central

The NMBM stated that water tankers would be deployed as needed to support areas directly impacted by the shutdown. Hospital services at Greenacres and St George’s Hospital were expected to implement contingency measures to ensure continuity of essential services.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” read the statement from the municipality.

Residents are advised to store water in advance and to use water sparingly during this period.
