MONDRAY Barnard, an emerging talent in the 110m hurdles, has taken a step forward by enrolling at The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Known for his impressive achievements on the track, Barnard is now balancing his academic aspirations alongside his athletic pursuits, aiming at international acclaim in the sporting world.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Barnard said, “I am looking forward to starting my tertiary journey. The smaller class sizes mean more one-on-one time with lecturers, which I’m sure will enhance my learning. I can’t wait to dive into my qualification, to push myself, and to get the most out of the whole experience.”
Barnard’s athletic accomplishments are noteworthy, including a second-place finish at the SA Athletics Championships 2024 in the 110m hurdles, a first-place victory in the 100m sprint at the Eastern Province Athletics Championships, and top positions in all his races during the 2024 European Athletics Leagues.
Looking ahead, Barnard is focused on two major international competitions: the FISU World University Games in Germany from July 16 to 27, and the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan from September 13 to 21. “Both are huge milestones for me, and I’m putting everything I’ve got into my training to make the most of these opportunities,” Barnard said.
Debbie Windsor, Sports Coordinator at The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay, remarked, “We are very excited to have an athlete of Mondray’s calibre and look forward to following his success and supporting him on the track and in the classroom. We wish him all the best.”
