THE South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF) has provided many independent small business owners with financial and developmental assistance, with the aim of breaking the cycle of poverty.

In February Yusuf Pandie, a retired carpenter with over 50 years’ experience in the industry, approached the local SANZAF office with a request for assistance towards equipment needed to sustain his carpentry business, which was in urgent need of a financial and machinery boost. Pandie specialises in making and trading garden furniture, such as wooden chairs, benches and tables.

On March 29, SANZAF made provision for purchase and delivery of machinery worth more than R15 000. This includes a brand-new planer thickener, mini-belt disc sander and a compound mitre saw.

“Pandie expressed his profound gratitude to the SANZAF office for the assistance granted to him. Mr Pandie will now be embarking on a skills development initiative,” said Siyamthanda Spaji, PR assistant for SANZAF.

“Through the boost his business received from SANZAF, he will now be able to teach and train young and unemployed people from the Salt Lake residential area and other communities around Gqeberha.”

This is one of various initiatives that SANZAF offers to small business owners in an effort to break the cycle of poverty by investing in small business development.
