Second fatal shooting in less than 24 hours on Govan Mbeki Avenue

A murder case was opened and is being investigated by SAPS Humewood following an incident where a man (47) was shot dead in Govan Mbeki Avenue yesterday, April 1, by an unknown armed suspect.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, said that at about 11:50, police members attached to SAPS Humewood were alerted to a shooting incident in Govan Mbeki Avenue, near Brister House, in Central.

He reported: “On arrival, the body of a male was found with several upper body gunshot wounds.

“It is alleged that he was standing on the center island in Govan Mbeki Avenue when he was approached by an unknown armed suspect who fired several shots at the victim.”

Beetge stated the victim passed away on the scene.

“Any person with information that could assist police with this investigation can contact the SAPS Humewood Detectives, Detective Sergeant Manento Baatjies at 073 962 2065 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.”

This is the second murder in this area in less than 24 hours, in the Govan Mbeki vicinity.

As previously reported by the PE Express, a taxi driver (44) was shot and killed on March 31, at the taxi rank next to Brister House, Govan Mbeki Avenue, Central.

According to Beetge, at about 16:45, SAPS Humewood police were alerted about the shooting incident.

Beetge reported: “It is alleged that the taxi driver was in his minibus taxi when he was approached by two unknown masked male suspects.

“One of the suspects fired several shots at him with a firearm, and the victim was wounded several times in his upper body.

“The suspects fled the scene on foot afterwards.”
