Virginia team triumphs in Wildeklawer national U19 football tournament

The Virginia High School, in partnership with the Virginia Sports Academy, has won the Wildeklawer national U19 football tournament that was played at the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley.

The tournament was held between 30 April and 3 May.

Virginia (VHS) beat Wildeklawer Academy in the final match. VHS won 4 – 3 on penalties, after the match ended in a 2 – 2 draw.

Hosted by the Kimberly Boys’ High School, 20 schools participated, including Grey College from Bloemfontein, Clapham High from Pretoria, Victoria Park from the Eastern Cape, Maritzburg College from KZN, the current National Kay Motsepe champions Curro Northern Academy from Limpopo and Paul Roos Gimnasium from the Western Cape.

VHS topped their group, group C, with ten points. They were in the same group as HTS Louis Botha, Reddam House Bedfordview, Victoria Park High and Brebner High School.

In the final match, Virginia High School versus Wildeklawer Academy, Virginia won 4-3 on penalties after the match ended in 2- 2 draw.

Individual awards were given to Sello Mokhobo, goalkeeper of the tournament, and Mpho Nhlokoe, player of the tournament. The title of best 11 was awarded to Sello Mokhobo, Mpho Nhlokoe, Lehlohonolo Khanas, Mozwakhe Flatela, Thato Kraal and Katleho Monyobi.

The team manager, Ngakane Lekhoba, says a few of the learners were also awarded the title of player of the match in the following matches:

■ Victoria Park vs VHS – Mpho Nhlokoe;

■ Brebner High School vs VHS – Lisolethu Tshangela;

■ HTS Louis Botha vs VHS – Thato Dichaba;

■ VHS vs Navalsig High School – Mpho Nhlokoe; and

■ the HTS Louis Botha vs VHS semifinal – Lebohang Mobe.

VHS, in partnership with Virginia Sports Academy, is the current provincial Kay Motsepe Schools Championship title holder (for two years, 2023 and 2024).

The upcoming tournaments that these star players are looking forward to include the Brebner Hitech in Bloemfontein in June, the Potchefstroom Boys High inaugural soccer tournament in Potchesftroom in August, the upcoming Kay Motsepe Schools Championship, Magnificent Wednesday U19 Boys League and the Engen Knockout Challenge (as Virginia Sports Academy).

The powerhouse who manages this team are Pitso Mokoena (head coach), Modise Liphoko (head of sport), Ngakane Lekhoba (team manager) and Mahlomola Seleke (goalkeeper coach).
