GQEBERHA – Police have arrested three suspects within hours of a fatal house robbery that claimed the life of a 65-year-old man in Newton Park on Thursday morning.
The victim was stabbed to death during a break-in at his home in Mangold Street at approximately 02:20 on 30 October.
According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, four suspects broke into the property whilst the couple were sleeping. The female victim reported hearing a loud noise before being confronted by the intruders in the passage.
“The suspects restrained her with cable ties, covered her head with a pillowcase and gagged her before ransacking the house,” said Janse van Rensburg. The perpetrators fled with a laptop and the victim’s Nissan Juke.
Hours later, SAPS Mount Road detectives moved swiftly to apprehend two women, aged 36 and 57, and a 36-year-old man.
The trio has been charged with murder and is expected to appear before the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 3 November.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Major General Vuyisile Ncata commended the detectives for their dedication, stating they “worked tirelessly” and “left no stone unturned” in their investigation.
