Tourist from Cape Town missing in Northern Cape national park

A 66-year-old male tourist from Cape Town is missing in Augrabies Falls National Park after failing to return from a hike. Search efforts are ongoing.

A 66-year-old male tourist from Cape Town has been reported missing in the Augrabies Falls National Park. The individual booked into this national park in the Northern Cape on Thursday, 10 April.

It is believed that he went hiking on Friday, 11 April, says Col Cherelle Ehlers, media spokesperson in the Northern Cape.

Ehlers says when the male tourist failed to return at 16:30, park rangers became concerned. they promptly reported the matter to the South African Police Service at the town of Augrabies.

His personal belongings and vehicle were still at the park.

A comprehensive search operation was immediately launched into his disappearance.

Members of the police in Augrabies, the police’s Airwing, Upington Search and Rescue Unit, Upington K9 Unit, and a drone pilot are actively involved in the ongoing search efforts.

  • On Monday, 14 April, the Augrabies waterfall was roaring with sound with 2 361 cumec metre per second. It is expected that the flow will increase in the next couple of days due to the high water levels in the Vaal and the Orange River.
