Two teens arrested for murder of Gqeberha police constable Callan Andrews

Two suspects, aged 17 and 18, were apprehended today, January 4, by the Gqeberha Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit of the Hawks in connection with the murder of Constable Callan Andrews on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve in Helenvale. More arrests are imminent.


Two suspects, aged 17 and 18, were apprehended today, January 4, by the Gqeberha Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit of the Hawks in connection with the murder of Constable Callan Andrews on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve in Helenvale. More arrests are imminent.

They were arrested on allegations of police murder and the robbery of a state firearm.

Police Constable Callan Andrews (29), attached to the Gelvandale Police Station, was brutally murdered while on duty on December 31, 2024, by the alleged suspects. At the time of the incident, the officer was on Voisen Road in Katanga, Gelvandale, in Gqeberha.

According to a statement issued by the Hawks, the suspects reportedly grabbed his service pistol and fatally wounded him. Constable Andrews was rushed to the nearest hospital, where he was declared deceased.

Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, said through an intelligence investigation by the Hawks, the suspects were arrested in Gqeberha. They are due to appear in the Gelvandale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 6.

“More arrests are imminent as the matter is still under investigation, and further details will not be divulged at the moment,” said W.O. Mhlakuvana.

The Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks, Brigadier Fernando Luis, has congratulated the determined and dedicated team of investigators. He further expressed his gratitude for the team’s contribution in swiftly apprehending the suspects. Brigadier Luis was also impressed by the collaboration between the police and the community for their willingness to assist in the investigation.

“This will help the police and community reach an impressive milestone in fighting against criminal activities,” said W.O. Mhlakuvana.

Tomorrow, a peaceful march will be held for Constable Andrews. Since the shooting, social media has been abuzz with people calling for “Justice for Callan.” The march will commence at 15:00 from Gelvandale Police Station to the crime scene. Attendees are asked to wear a black t-shirt and bring a light blue balloon to release at the site. Parking will be provided at Christ the King Church.
