The car that plunged into North End Lake on Friday, was recovered from the water yesterday.

The white Ford Ikon landed in the lake after three men that reportedly work at a car wash, allegedly took the vehicle for a ‘joyride’ when the incident occurred.

The driver allegedly lost control around a bend in Milner Avenue, Sydenham and plunged into the water. He drowned, but his two passengers managed to escape the wreckage. They were taken to hospital for further treatment.

“An inquest docket has been opened for further investigation,” police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, confirmed.

According to spokesperson for Gardmed Ambulance Services, Elton Smith, it was conveyed to him at the scene by the two survivors that the owner of the vehicle had left his car at the car wash. “The police wanted to arrest them, but they said that there’s a clause in their contract with the client at the car wash that they are allowed to take the car for a ride,” Smith said.

Meanwhile, police have identified the 26-year-old deceased, but cannot release his name as they are still trying to get a hold of his next-of-kin.
