Joubert today (SAST) showed off her national costume, designed by Gert-Johan Coetzee, during the National Costume Round. The fabric wings of her gown features drawings made by young children from South Africa. It tells the story of pre-school children’s personal experiences of lockdown and how the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted their young lives.

She shared a video of her walking on the stage in her costume and said: “Thinking of every child in South Africa who arguably went through one of the toughest years in history and yet are still filled with so much hope for the future. I carried that hope with me on that stage tonight.”

She further wrote: “Guys, I just walked the Miss Universe stage! I’m going to need someone to pinch me to make sure I’m not dreaming.”

The Miss Universe competition will be held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida on 16 May (17 May SAST). The hosts are Mario Lopez and Olivia Culpo with a performance by Pitbull.

  • Catch the 69th Miss Universe Competition live on 1Magic (DStv Channel 103) on 17 May at 02:00 (SAST). The repeat will be broadcast on the same channel at 21:30 (SAST).
