The second local qualifying cypher battle of the world’s most prestigious breaking competition – Red Bull BC One – took place this weekend in Gqeberha.

The competition had the city’s best breakers from the Eastern Cape province battle it out for a spot to represent their hometown at the national final.

Held at the Fairview Sports Centre, the cypher weekend kicked off with a series of workshops on Saturday, featuring the country’s top breakers who highlighted various topics regarding the culture of breaking and what goes behind the scenes to compete at the top level.

The workshop had a special appearance from Red Bull athlete and Guinnes World Record holder for the fastest 50m rope climb, Thomas van Tonder, who facilitated the endurance workshop. The regional qualifying cyphers took place on Sunday where Mids and B-Boy Rhythm came out victorious.

“It was amazing, I have been preparing for months before this. The hardwork and determination paid off. The Red Bull BC One battles were good, I mostly loved the great energy and vibe of the two day experience. I took it easy and focused on enjoying the process,” said B-girl Mids.

“The Gqeberha cypher was dope, I really enjoyed competing with all the contestants. I’m thrilled to be representing my city at the final in Cape Town and I’m looking forward to seeing who will qualify and represent Cape Town and Oudtshoorn in the next two weeks,” said B-boy Rhythm.

The cypher weekends are now heading to Cape Town and Oudtshoorn where each city will announce a B-boy and B-girl that will get a spot to compete at the national final, set to happen in Cape Town on Saturday, 24 April.
