If you wondered why #iPad trended on South African Twitter yesterday – no, it was not a campaign by Apple to get people talking about one of their products.

It was in fact South African President Cyril Ramaphosa who made the hashtag #iPad trend on social media when he “lost” his iPad, shortly before he had to make a speech in Cape Town.

When called to the podium to deliver his speech, Ramaphosa realised he did not have his iPad with him. He jokingly said his iPad was stolen.

“Somebody decided they want to dispossess me of my iPad, so I want that. Can I have my ipad please?” he asked and then added “so they stole it.”

South Africans then took to Twitter to comment on this incident.

Here are some of the Tweets:

The Presidency also Tweeted that the President was making “a light-hearted point” while he waited for his iPad.

Athi Geleba, Head of Digital Communications in the Presidency, Tweeted yesterday that the “First iPad” has been found.
