In celebration of Youth Day, PE Express is launching an exciting initiative to recognise and reward young community heroes who are making a positive impact in their neighbourhoods.

The ‘Young Heroes’ campaign aims to shine a spotlight on individuals aged 21 or younger who demonstrate exceptional commitment to improving their communities through volunteer work, innovative projects, mentorship, or other meaningful contributions.

‘Youth Day commemorates the courage and sacrifice of the young people who stood up for change in 1976. Today, we want to honour that legacy by celebrating our current young heroes who are building a better future for all South Africans,’ said Zeldré Swanepoel, regional editor of PE Express.

How It Works:

The search for these inspiring young individuals will be conducted through PE Express’s social media platforms.

Community members are encouraged to nominate deserving young heroes by:

  • Fill in the form below.
  • Go to Facebook comments, say “done” and use the use hashtag, #PEYoungHeroes2025 when creating post.
  • Sharing the story of a young person (21 or younger) making a difference
  • Including photos or videos showcasing their community work
  • Only nominees residing in Port Elizabeth will be eligible to enter.

Prizes

The initiative comes with attractive cash prizes to support these young changemakers: – First Prize: R3,000 – Second Prize: R2,000 – Third Prize: R1,000

‘We believe in investing in our youth and recognising their contributions to society. These prizes will hopefully help these young heroes expand their community initiatives,’ added Swanepoel.

Nominations will be evaluated based on the impact of the nominee’s work, creativity, leadership skills, and dedication to serving others.

The winners’ inspiring stories will be showcased in a special Youth Day Supplement which will be inserted into some of the print editions of PE Express and UD Express. It will also be published as E-pub to download for free.

The inspiring stories of all finalists will be showcased on our websites and social media platforms.

Don’t miss this opportunity to nominate a young hero in your community. Nominations close on June 6.
