DYLAN Fourie, a Grade 8 learner from Pearson High School, has taken his passion for swimming to the next level, and he now uses his well-honed talent for the sport of lifesaving.
Fourie began his foray into lifesaving at the age of 13, when he joined Summerstrand Lifesaving Club as a nipper. This year he has progressed to the juniors and is excelling at the sport.
Responding to why he went from swimming in pools to lifesaving, Fourie said swimming laps was no longer a challenge to him.
“One day I was at a function and I saw junior lifesavers training, so, I decided to go and try it for myself. I enjoyed it so much that I stayed,” he said.
His love for the ocean was also a contributing factor in him pursuing the sport. His advice to youngsters who have wondered about the sport is to join a club and try it for themselves to see how good they are.
Fourie competes in three disciplines: swimming, beach events and Malibu board. He was recently inclu-ded in the Eastern Province lifesaving team that participated in the interprovincial competition earlier this month.
